A latent variable model for estimating disease transmission rate from data on household outbreaks
نویسندگان
چکیده
A Bayesian latent variable model is proposed for studying household epidemics of infectious diseases in this paper. This model is more general and flexible than the commonly used chain binomial epidemicmodel. In particular, themodel allows for the heterogeneity of the infection transmission rates in related to the sizes and generations of the infectives. Moreover, the model assumes the availability of only the household outbreak sizes, which is more reasonable than assuming the availability of the hardly observed infection chains. The Tanner–Wong’s IP algorithm is employed for effective simulations and inferences of this model. Finally, this model was applied to analyzing a real data set on F-4 Asian influenza. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A Business Model to Detect Disease Outbreaks
Introduction: Every year several disease outbreaks, such as influenza-like illnesses (ILI) and other contagious illnesses, impose various costs to public and non-government agencies. Most of these expenses are due to not being ready to handle such disease outbreaks. An appropriate preparation will reduce the expenses. A system that is able to recognize these outbreaks can earn ...
متن کاملEstimating Individual and Household Reproduction Numbers in an Emerging Epidemic
Reproduction numbers, defined as averages of the number of people infected by a typical case, play a central role in tracking infectious disease outbreaks. The aim of this paper is to develop methods for estimating reproduction numbers which are simple enough that they could be applied with limited data or in real time during an outbreak. I present a new estimator for the individual reproductio...
متن کاملA Disease Outbreak Prediction Model Using Bayesian Inference: A Case of Influenza
Introduction: One major problem in analyzing epidemic data is the lack of data and high dependency among the available data, which is due to the fact that the epidemic process is not directly observable. Methods: One method for epidemic data analysis to estimate the desired epidemic parameters, such as disease transmission rate and recovery rate, is data ...
متن کاملAvian Influenza H5N1 Transmission in Households, Indonesia
BACKGROUND Disease transmission patterns are needed to inform public health interventions, but remain largely unknown for avian influenza H5N1 virus infections. A recent study on the 139 outbreaks detected in Indonesia between 2005 and 2009 found that the type of exposure to sources of H5N1 virus for both the index case and their household members impacted the risk of additional cases in the ho...
متن کاملPredicting waste generation using Bayesian model averaging
A prognosis model has been developed for solid waste generation from households in Hoi An City, a famous tourist city in Viet Nam. Waste sampling, followed by a questionnaire survey, was carried out to gather data. The Bayesian model average method was used to identify factors significantly associated with waste generation. Multivariate linear regression analysis was then applied to evaluate th...
